Mobile towers: New emission norms from 1st September Mobile towers: New emission norms from 1st September

As per the new norms, emission from mobile towers will be reduced by 1/10 of the current standards from next month
New Delhi: The Union Government on Friday said it will implement new tower emission norms from 1 September 2012 although there is no evidence that proves any adverse health effects due to radiations from mobile towers, reports PTI.
As per the new norms, emission from mobile towers will be reduced by 1/10 of the current standards.
"The effect of emission from cell phone towers is not known yet with certainty. However, as a precautionary measure, the inter-ministerial committee (IMC) recommended for reduction of base station emissions to 1/10th of the existing prescribed limit," Minister of State for Communications and IT Milind Deora said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
The inter-ministerial committee or IMC on electro-magnetic field (EMF) was constituted by Department of Telecom (DoT) to examine the health related concerns arising out of mobile towers radiations.
But the IMC was unable to find any direct link between exposure to radio frequency radiation from mobile towers and health.
"The scientific studies as yet have not been able to confirm a cause-and-effect relationship between radio frequency radiation and health," Deora said.
However, the IMC recommended as a precautionary measure to cut the emission norms by 1/10th, which were accepted by DoT.
These directions were initially effective from April 1, 2012.
"However, for examination of the impact of revised EMF exposure limit on area coverage...the new norms have been extended and shall now come into effect from September 1, 2012," Deora added.
DoT had adopted the EMF norms in 2008 in respect of mobile towers prescribed by International Commission on Non- Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP).
